When does blogging become too personal? Are you sharing too much information about yourself?

criminalI was watching the Sacramento news report tonight about a man who announced on Twitter that he was going out of town for vacation. No big deal right?

Well.. when he got back from vacation his home had been cleaned out and the police are now investigating the possibility of this robbery being directly related to his Tweet.

I think this is a great reminder of the consequences of posting personal information online.

My personal Internet strategy includes utilizing Twitter, Facebook and blogging as a way to build our business online.

I use Twitter to send out real estate related information and very rarely make the posts too personal. It makes me nervous to go too deep with folks that I don't know. You can not control who has access to your tweets... so you never know who is on the other end of the computer.

Now Facebook (for me) is another story... Many folks using Facebook to promote what they do will allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to be Facebook friends. Not me! I use Facebook to go deep with my peeps! I want to feel comfortable uploading family photos and openly talk about our vacations or share my daily life with my friends. Because I can control (at least for now) who is allowed to see my information... I can let my guard down and just be myself.

That leads me to the point of my post!

Blogging is much like Twitter in that you can't control who is reading your posts. It goes out to the Internet for everyone to see.

I see folks here on Active Rain posting pictures of their family, homes and vacations. On one hand you want to give a personal touch to your blogs and let people get to know you beyond Mr. or Mrs. Realtor or Mortgage Broker... but when are your telling too much about yourself?

To be honest.. I love reading these posts. Getting a play-by-play of someone's vacaton as they are on the beach in Hawaii is great!... BUT

kids on vacationYOU CAN NOT CONTROL WHO IS READING YOUR BLOG!

The fact is there are creepy people in the world... just in case you did not know that ;).

If someone can reference your blog archives and find out where you live, where your kids go to school and what they look like, or determine when you are out of town... Is that a good thing?

For me this news report was a reminder that I really need to monitor what I am putting out onto the Internet!
